More on the Chumash

The Pismo Beach region has an interesting history going back in time to 1769, when Don Gaspar de Portola and parties camped in the area. According to the diary of Costanso, a member of the Portola party, "the party continued over the sand dunes and then descended to the beach, along which they walked for several miles before camping for the night. Near their camping place was an Indian village of some forty people." Undoubtedly, the beach walked upon by the Portola party was that known today as Pismo Beach. 

The City of Pismo Beach was founded in 1891. Incorporation occurred in 1946. Pismo Beach is located approximately two hundred miles north of Los Angeles and two hundred miles south of San Francisco.  Pismo Beach thrives on tourism boasting over 30 restaurants and more than fifty  motels, hotels, inns and RV parks. Nearby Oceano Dunes offers ATV, surfing and camping on the beach.

Visitors enjoy a large variety of activities including bicycling,  golfing, hiking, tennis, horseback riding (on the beach!), ocean activities and bowling. This area of California's central coast offers miles of non crowded pristine beaches with rich tide pools, beach caves and secret coves. Fishermen will enjoy the Pismo Pier.
